Where a water resource is prescribed, such as the Angas Bremer
Prescribed Wells Area and the River Murray Prescribed Watercourse, the Water
Resources Act 1997 requires a water allocation plan to be developed.
Development of a water allocation plan is the responsibility
of the relevant catchment water
management board (CWMB) or a water resources planning committee. During
the development of a water allocation plan, a draft plan is made available for
public comment, enabling the people affected by the plan to provide valuable
input. Once the draft water allocation plan has been through the public
consultation and amendment process and is formally adopted by the Minister, the
plan becomes a legally binding document.
A water allocation plan provides for equitable share of the
available water resource between social, economic and environmental needs. It
aims to achieve sustainable development of the resource, taking into
consideration present and future water needs. In order to achieve this, a water
allocation plan specifies criteria for the taking and the transferring of a
water allocation.
Within the Angas Bremer Prescribed Wells Area where both
groundwater and River Murray watercourse water (sourced from Lake Alexandrina )
are used there are two water allocation plans that govern water use. The Water
Allocation Plan for the Angas Bremer Prescribed Wells Area and the Water
Allocation Plan for the River Murray Prescribed Watercourse
